Retirement News Articles – August 21, 2023

Posted on 08/21/202312/25/2023 by Mike

Welcome to Retirement News Articles for the week of August 21st:

My favorite articles (it was a tough decision this week) for the week are:

  • Food, Nutrition & Cooking – What Neurologists Eat for Breakfast
  • Recreation & Hobbies – Here’s How Cycling Can Slow Down the Aging Process
  • Arts, Entertainment and Reading – A Reading Guide for Grownups Who Don’t Read

Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Check out my other posts for the week as well:

Thank you
Mike

Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles

The Bonus Story asks a very good question: “We might be able to genetically engineer something like woolly mammoths, but is it a good idea?” Personally, the movie Jurassic Park told me all I need to answer this question. That said, for a recently extinct animal, I might reconsider.

Travel for Seniors

I have always been in favor of avoiding big crowds or the latest rage. I therefore couldn’t resist sharing the first story about ten alternatives to Paris. Article 2 takes us to the other end of the spectrum, giving you useful tips for car camping.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors

Intermittent fasting seems to be all the rage, at least based upon the numerous articles I found concerning the subject. Below, the author of this article provides a list of very notable health benefits of intermittent fasting.

On a more serious note, article 2 discusses heart failure, which can even happen in children and young adults. If caught early, lifestyle changes and medications can improve your health and prolong your life. This is a must-read.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

The first two articles continue my focus upon food and nutrition…and what it can do for your overall health. Neurologists recommend 8 healthy breakfast meals as well as tell you to stay away from sugary cereals, pastries and fatty (or processed) meats. The second article tells us that though fatty meats aren’t so good for us, foods high in omega 3 fatty-acids are the best thing for you and your brain. The article singles out salmon as the #1 best food.

Article 3 shares the nutritional difference between Greek and regular yogurt. It looks like Greek yogurt wins out, but I will let you decided for yourself. Article 4 gives you tips on reheating pizza, an art I’m sure we would all like to learn.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

I have always been an avid cyclist, not only for leisure and transportation, but for philanthropic events as well, having completed several fund-raising rides (MS-150 and Cystic Fibrosis Cycle for Life). Article 1 is therefore near and dear to me as it shows the health benefits of cycling for seniors. Of course, a variety of exercise options likely have similar results, but not all will allow you to “see the sights” like cycling can.

Article 2 is for those who would like to take up gardening but have no idea of where to begin. Actually, it is not just one article, but a series of 14 articles that will tell you everything you need to know to be a successful gardener.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

I am a big proponent of life-long learning as well as an avid reader, when I find time, but I guess these articles count, right? Article one made my top three favorites for this week as it is a guide for adults on how to return to reading. Studies have shown that reading is an activity that can help seniors not only maintain their cognitive abilities as they age, but provides numerous other benefits as well.

Article 2 almost made my favorites for this week as I am a big fan of the performing arts. In my opinion, the author makes a great case for the need for evolution of theater in America. His description of the current state describes an “industry” that is bloated and out of touch with current reality. If you love the arts like I do, I encourage you to read the article.

Opinion: Why Theater (in its Current Form) Does Not Deserve to be Saved

Retirement News Articles

Financial Management for Seniors

Article one gives you a list of income sources upon which you don’t have to pay income. There are some variables, however. As your earned income rises, some sources (social security is one) will be exposed to taxes.

Article two is more of a novelty for those of you that are proud of your FICO credit score that hovers close to 850. That uber-high score can be of personal pride, but may not provide much real value.

Once You Hit This Credit Score, It’s No Benefit to Go Higher
