Retirement News Articles – July 1, 2024

Posted on 07/01/202407/01/2024 by Mike

Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of July 1st. This was another week full of medical appointments for my son, so the newsletter was all I was able to post.

My favorite articles for the week are:

  • Bonus Story: Not Welcome: 25 Reasons Americans Are Becoming MORE Unpopular Abroad
  • Travel for Seniors: The 51 Most Beautiful Places in the World
  • Financial Management for Seniors: Should you tip on restaurant takeout? Or a coffee order?

Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Thank you

Mike

Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story

For many, retirement includes the dream of international travel. For those headed to distant places, this bonus story may be a worthwhile read. It can always feel awkward to be in a foreign country, but why add to that discomfort with improper or “obnoxious” American tourist behavior if you can avoid the embarrassment? Even as an American, I grew tired of hearing from my fellow Americans about how disappointed they were in the difficulties of finding American fast food in Europe…I will say no more.

Travel for Seniors
Travel for Seniors

Article one, from Conde Nast, gives you the ultimate travel bucket list, that is if you are into beautiful landscapes. This would be a lifetime list, but I am guessing some of these you can knock off in a single trip, for those with the time and the resources.

You know my passion for trains. Article two, from Travel + Leisure, shares a that the Rocky Mountaineer was voted the best train in the world by their readers.

A panel of brain and Alzheimer’s experts convened by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted unanimously on June 10 that a new Alzheimer’s drug developed by Eli Lilly, called donanemab, is effective and that the benefits of the medication outweigh its risks. The next step is to refer the drug to the FDA for approval.

Article two shares 10 towns with beautiful scenery and nearby hiking. Those are two of my primary criteria for a home base…and if it is for you as well, read on. I do think it’s fair to say one could find less traveled, less expensive alternatives to those cities on the list as well.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

Article one, from WebMD, gives us tasty and healthy ways to grill food, from pizza, to meats and fruits and vegetables. If you are interested in more healthy grilling tips, check out this previous article from Optimal Retirement Living: Grilling Meat Ideas for Healthier Eating

When it comes to kitchen items, the more versatile, the better. With this theme in mind, article two gives us 18 recipes in which to use your muffin tin. The recipes range from desserts and pigs in a blanket to several egg dishes.

If you have been with me for long, you know bicycling is a past time I enjoy immensely. I am always happy to share tips with others to encourage other riders. In article one, Bicycling Magazine offers you tips on preparing for your next bike ride.

It’s nice to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. However, as July is now here, the daytime temperatures can near 100, making it not only uncomfortable, but sometimes dangerous to be outside for extended periods. Article two, admittedly from an Arizona retirement community, provides several ideas for indoor activities to keep us cool and yet active.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading

The author of article one, Ross Johnson from LifeHacker, shares that sometimes, a movie is of such depth or complexity, that it is best watched by yourself, without distractions. Ross has shared a list of 27 movies to immerse yourself in, with most being quiet and thoughtful…something not often found in Hollywood.

Nicollette Larson was a roommate and close friend of Linda Ronstadt and sang on several Neil Young albums as well as having a romantic relationship with him. Those within the industry knew of her beautiful voice and ability to harmonize. However, as article two shares, she never became a household name and deserves more recognition.

Article one, from Business Insider, discusses how tipping grew during the pandemic and has reached ridiculous levels. It has gotten to the point of frustration for many customers, with a resulting revolt. Tipping should be for services received, not a self-serve product or takeout. The article gives you the OK to say no and explains when that makes sense.

As you develop an asset allocation strategy for your retirement savings and investments, one decision is how much liquid assets (near cash) you should hold. Once that decision has been made, article two, from Kiplinger, gives you 3 ideas on where to “park” that money.

Should you tip on restaurant takeout? Or a coffee order? It’s getting out of hand.
