Retirement News Articles – July 17, 2023

Posted on 07/17/202312/11/2023 by Mike

I hope you notice and appreciate a new theme and layout for my website. Compared to my more rudimentary start-up, I am very pleased with the look of the updated site. I hope you find it more pleasing to the eye and informative as well.

You may recall that I mentioned in a previous Retirement News Articles newsletter that my overall focus was going to be around food, nutrition and cooking. I committed, however, to continue the broader content of this weekly newsletter. I will continue to hold to that promise, but this week you will notice I have included 4 articles within the “Food, Nutrition & Cooking” section. Next week, you will see the Travel for Seniors section be reduced to 2 weekly articles. I anticipate this new format will remain consistent for the foreseeable future.

As noted on my inaugural newsletter post, I am not the author of these retirement news articles, but have searched earnestly for quality articles that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Also, be sure to check out my other posts for the week:

  • Resources for Hiker and Walkers
  • Cycling Resources for Seniors
  • Travel Tips for Seniors

Thank you

Mike

Retirement News Articles

Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles

For all of you seasoned travelers, this week’s Retirement News Articles Bonus Story is an explanation why you find that airliner seats are blue more often than not. The article shares numerous insights on other interior design features of commercial aircraft as well.

The Real Reason Most Plane Seats are Blue

Senior Housing and 55+ Communities

With this week’s first article, we are not discussing best places to live, but are discussing the first step in the process of “moving on”.  Once the children have left the house, the family-sized home may be more than is necessary for a retired couple. Therefore, it might be time to de-clutter and prepare your home for putting it on the market. You will find a 7-step plan to take you through this process.

Once you have sold your current home, it is time to go house hunting (actually, you have likely already started this process).  Article two gives you some ideas of low cost communities where you can still find affordable housing.

Travel

Like last week, this week’s travel articles are a mixed bag. The first one gives you a long list of National Park properties you might want to add to your travel to-do list.

Article 2 is a news item I came across this week that may be of interest to those of you who like to take cruises…or are even considering a first time cruise.

Health and Welfare for Seniors

Technology is often intimidating to seniors. However, this week we have an article that provides ample reason to perhaps add a smartwatch to your shopping list. Admittedly, the article doesn’t give much detail on the use of the smartwatch, but I will be looking for more information on this topic as time passes.

The second article discusses one of my favorite pastimes, spending time in nature. It is widely accepted that spending time in the outdoors is good for both physical and mental health. This article is just another reminder.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

The first two articles are focused upon ready-made meals. As a contrast, article one provides tips on how to find and prepare healthy ready-made meals, while article two tells you what to avoid.

Article three takes us on a tour of the US, state by state, sandwich by sandwich. I don’t know if I would travel long distances just for a sandwich, but if you happen to be visiting, why not check out the state’s best sandwich?

Lastly, as I have shared often, I believe summer-time is the time for picnics and outdoor gatherings. Given that belief, you will find me writing in the future about the social aspects of cooking and dining. The final article gives us a great introduction to that subject.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

I admit to being a not-so-good, aspiring guitarist. It is something I have wanted to excel in my entire life, but time constraints have prevented me from fully achieving that goal. However, as article one will attest, my interest and efforts are not in vain.  Though I may never be stage ready, at least I am doing something I enjoy and that is good for my brain.

The second article is a bit off-beat. I personally have a life-long affinity for not just music, but the arts, reading and history in general. I have often thought that arena might be a good target for potential volunteer opportunities. I am sure you could look for local opportunities yourself, but this article shares a more national twist on that subject.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

The first article provides a list of “best” books of early 2023. It’s an eclectic mix, with perhaps a focus on suspense and intrigue. The second article continues my summer festival theme, with a calendar of festivals around the world.

Financial Management for Seniors

Similar to last week, the first article talks about regrets and what not to do when planning your financial future.  We then take a more positive look at the current financial environment and learn that all is not lost.
