Music & Arts Festivals – 2023

If you have been following my Retirement News Article newsletters, you know that I have an affinity for summer festivals of all kinds, especially Music & Arts Festivals. There have been various festival calendars featured in those newsletters…one at a time. I apologize that as we enter “mid-summer”, it didn’t occur to me until now that a compilation of these calendars would prove handy to my readers. I will say that this list below is not complete as you can search and find dozens of such calendars. However, I do feel this is representative.

It is hoped that you find this post and the calendars useful as you embark on some fun road trips. Also, be expecting a similar post on Fall and Holiday Festivals and Events as we enter the fall.

Country, Folk and Bluegrass Festivals

The 25 Biggest & Best Folk Music Festivals in the U.S.A

Looking for the best folk festivals in 2023 & 2024 in the USA? Well, look no further, because I’ve put together a pretty epic list of bluegrass and folk music festivals in this amazing country!

“I didn’t know folk music growing up, no. It’s something I’ve come to study, really, because I think there’s so much to learn from traditional music in the sense of the way music began as a way of communication, the traveling storyteller, the bard, the minstrels.” – P.J Harvey

The definition of folk music can be defined as “a type of traditional and generally rural music that originally was passed down through families and other small social groups. Typically, folk music, like folk literature, lives in oral tradition; it is learned through hearing rather than reading.

Your 2023 Country Music Festival Guide

This ultimate list of 2023 country music festivals across America includes several iconic fests and a handful of upstart parties that are changing the game. Which country fest will you be in 2023 and which artists are you looking forward to seeing?

Morgan Wallen is the most popular country festival headliner, but Cody Johnson, Tim McGraw, Kane Brown and Chris Stapleton are leading a number of bills as well. Tickets for a few fests have already sold out, which has to be very good news for artists after finding fans to be a bit tentative last year.

2023 should be different. This robust list of more than three festivals touches Myrtle Beach, western Washington and just about every state in between. Dierks Bentley, Jake Owen and Miranda Lambert are a few more artists who will embrace the heat and the wild nature of country fans in the summer. It’s not just a party — in some cases it’s a four-day party!

The 2023 Guide to Festivals

Looking over our largest-ever Guide, we are struck by the breadth of offerings, not only of repertoire, but also of vintage, genre, and practitioner—from rising artist to devoted amateur to seasoned pro and all points in between. Some festivals are also training academies, the best-known including Aspen, Tanglewood, Lucerne, and Verbier. Others are strictly geared to serve a paying public, such as Philadelphia’s Mann Center or the Bravo! Vail Music Festival. Many are both, with lessons, workshops, rehearsals by day and public concerts by night. Enjoy!

Arts Festivals

Arts Festival Calendar

Howard Alan’s first art show was in a Boca Raton housing development during the dead heat of summer. Let’s just say it was a great learning experience. Howard also started promoting craft shows in shopping centers, in conjunction with bands, classic cars and beauty pageants. Approximately 100 exhibitors were featured. It was a serious struggle, but Howard was determined to make it work. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Howard Alan is one of the most widely and highly recognized art fair promoters in the industry. Along with Debbie, his wife and business partner of 30 years and their dedicated staff, Howard runs 45 annual juried art shows and 40 annual craft shows out of a small office in Jupiter, Florida.

No matter which corner of the nation you visit you are sure to find a Howard Alan event somewhere, be it Aspen, Pittsburgh, Alexandria, Cleveland, Ft. Lauderdale or Sarasota, just to name a few. These popular outdoor festivals are consistently ranked among the top art shows in the country.

Music and Arts Festival Calendar Around the US

Theatres and Festivals Across the US

The listing below consists of professional theatres and theatre festivals in each US state that run through the summer months and have auditions and/or jobs posted on their site. Summer stock theatres and summer theatre festivals are excellent résumé builders for high school graduates, college and university students, and professionals who either want to work through the summer or add onto their résumé. A variety of paid and unpaid work is available, and apprenticeships and unpaid internships can be valuable experience for a first or second job after high school or your first couple of college years.* Note that some theatres and festivals may also audition and/or interview at various conferences or list openings on various call boards, though the website may not note it. If a theatre has only one link in its listing, the page may have a combination of performance, technical, design, internship, and other work available on or through that page. Just because it says “work with us” or “auditions” in the URL doesn’t mean there may not be more to it.

Note, too, that web sites can change web masters, designers, platforms, organizational methods, etc. If a link is broken, please let me know, but also check the main website for the company. You may have to do some hunting around, but opportunities can be found at the bottom of pages, under “about us”, “opportunities”, “work with us”, and a variety of other locations in a website. If all else fails, search engines are your friend.
