Living a Happy, Healthy Retirement

Retirement News Articles – July 3, 2023

As noted on my inaugural newsletter post, I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, but have searched earnestly for quality articles that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

In my search for articles for this newsletter, it is not unusual for me to come across an article that I find particularly interesting, but that has nothing to do with retirement. I have decided to share those finds with an added category, which I call “Bonus Story”. Let’s just say it feeds my focus upon life-long learning. I hope you enjoy them as we travel this journey together.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles

I came across this article as we head into the week of July 4th and thought it a timely post. Besides, as you are quickly learning, I can’t stay away from a good train story.

Senior Housing and 55+ Communities

Following up with last week’s focus is on retiring overseas, the first article shares that Vienna, Austria was nominated the best place to live in the world. It’s a short article that lists the top ten as well as mentioning that this year’s list sees two American cities drop off the list.

Article two provides 10 different lifestyles you may want to consider. Luckily, most of them don’t require millions of dollars in savings or a move to make them happen.

Travel

Today’s travel articles are a mixed bag, with one even taking us Back to the Future. The first article provides advice on the best time to visit Italy. In summary, the article states that just before or after peak season is best, with the period between April and June being especially spectacular.

The second article provides a list of American tourist traps to be avoided. I will let you make up your mind whether indeed they are worthy of a place on this list.

Article three is indeed a trip to the future. Note that the article was recently updated on August 19, 2023. I told you I undertake arduous research to find these articles, but finding this one required a once in a lifetime trip. The article lists 25 of the best small towns in America worth visiting. Having visited several of them, I would agree. You will see a short list of sights to see and places to stay for each destination. Please let me know if your article is NOT indeed from the future, because if so, perhaps I have a broken flux capacitor.

OK, if I haven’t told you already, I am a retired Engineer. The last article is a testament to that fact. I will even admit to working for an Airport consulting firm in Denver in the 1980’s that was responsible for some of the initial master planning of Denver International Airport (DIA). If you possess an inner geek/alter ego, I hope you enjoy the article.

Though the first article discusses some alarming findings with the testing of melatonin supplements, it goes on to tell you what to look for when shopping for supplements in general. The article closes by stating that a healthy, well-balanced diet is preferable to supplements to meet your dietary needs. I will be discussing much of this in an upcoming article on nutrition and supplements for seniors.

I admit that yoga has always intrigued me, not for the mystical or spiritual aspects, but for the physical and mental health benefits that can come from practicing this ancient art. Article two provides a condensed, 15 minute version to entice you to give it a try.

As I have found with several friends and family, breakfast can often be my favorite meal of the day. For that to be the case, however, it needs to be something beyond a bowl of cereal. This article doesn’t disappoint; actually, it is several articles, ALL taking the reader well beyond that boring bowl of cereal.

The second article is the obligatory “ode” to our traditional 4th of July barbecues with a number of not-so-traditional recipes.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

As a life-long tennis player (who taught my son to the point he mops up the court with me), I couldn’t resist sharing the first article. I have only played pickleball once, but enjoyed it thoroughly, finding it to be fun both physically and socially. In my opinion, this is a great sport for seniors, with doubles being especially appropriate for couples.

Summer is time to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air and weather that summer provides. Article two begins by telling us why getting outside is good for all of us. I couldn’t agree more, with the article closing by encouraging you to enjoy one of my favorite summer-time activities…craft shows and festivals.

10 Summer Activities for Seniors

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

The first article gives you 50 of the greatest summer novels of all time. Some I’ve heard of and read and some not. For me, this would be a bucket list for the next 5-10 summers. The second article continues my summer festival theme of last week. This time, it lists all the major theater festivals state by state.

Financial Management for Seniors

The first article provides 10 retirement myths you may want to consider if you want to enjoy your retirement years. Article two shares that Americans are shifting their investment strategies in our inflationary times.
