Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of January 22, 2024. My son and I traveled to Duke University Hospital this week for some medical appointments. That consumed most of the week, resulting in no posts besides this weekly newsletter.
My favorite articles for the week are:
- Bonus Story: How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies…and Stop Them Before They Appear
- Lifestyle, Health and Welfare: The 5 Most Common Regrets of the Dying—and What We Can Learn From Them

Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story
I was relieved to learn fruit flies are a common kitchen pest. I thought maybe it was just me, though I keep a clean kitchen. This article tells us how we can prevent and eliminate these ever present, pesky creatures.

Travel for Seniors
This first article, from Conde Nast, provides a list and short review of each of their “underrated” European cities. I have heard of only a few, which might just mean I don’t know Europe well. However, it is clear by the write-up, there is plenty to do and enjoy in these lesser known destinations.
For those looking for pedestrian-friendly cities beyond the enchanting realm, there’s helpful information available in article two, brought to you, again, by Conde Nast. Smart Growth America has compiled a comprehensive ranking of the most walkable cities in the U.S. as part of its 2023 Foot Traffic Ahead Report. This study assesses the percentage of walkability in the 35 largest metropolitan regions in the U.S. and organizes them based on their rankings. Note that this list is the top 20 large metropolitan areas. If you are looking for a small town vibe, check out this article.

Lifestyle, Health & Welfare for Seniors
The first article is focused upon your infamous circadian rhythm, which is strongly tied to the sun and natural light. Bottom line, the article encourages you to stop pushing the snooze button and expose yourself to light as early in the day as you can. It will be a boon to your emotional and physical health.
On a more somber (though informative and ultimately inspiring) note, article two discusses lessons learned from Bronnie Ware, a former palliative care nurse and bestselling author. She lists several very common regrets. I will add a personal one; it’s time I stop watching so much TV and spend more time with my guitar!!

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
Remnants from a delightful meal are often appreciated, but the same cannot be said for wine. The flavor of this beverage can deteriorate rapidly if not stored properly. Fortunately, thanks to centuries of savoring this grape elixir, there are various hacks and gadgets designed to extend the shelf life of an opened bottle. Article one gives you run down on how to keep that beloved bottle fresh to the last drop.
As the headline states, the second article gives you recipes to 15 mouth-watering, filling snack ideas. Admittedly, these aren’t just grab and go, but will require some prep time. That said, they are worth the effort!

Recreation, Exercise & Hobbies
The first article gives us some ideas to break out of the winter doldrums. Interestingly, all 6 of these ideas cited can be done alone, which is great for those of you living by yourselves. That said, some of them could also be enjoyed with a neighbor or best friend.
As a follow up to my last sentence above, article two gives you 22 board games you can play with friends (and family). This is a sure way to escape cabin fever and enjoy a few laughs with your favorite company.

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading
This week’s Entertainment section is focused upon child stars…two of the more prolific, coming from different generations. Both are accomplished and hold a place in the hearts and memories of many movie fans.
Article one is about a current star, who is seeing plenty of work, even as she enters her 6th decade in the entertainment world.
Jodie Foster has been an actor since she was 3, which means she has been nearly her entire life. Article one delves into the details of one of her current projects, True Detective: Night Country, which debuted on HBO January 14th. If you are a fan of Jode Foster, you will be pleased that the article is lengthy and goes beyond jus the current projects.
Shirley Temple, the iconic child star and later accomplished adult, had a diverse and impressive multi-faceted career. From her early success as a top box office draw in the 1930s to her later roles as a mother, delegate to the United Nations, political candidate, environmental activist, chief of protocol, and ambassador, Shirley Temple’s life indeed covered a wide range of achievements and experiences. If you would like to learn more, check out article two.

Financial Management for Seniors
The guide in article one, admittedly from a senior housing provider, gives seniors a look at the financial considerations when looking at senior living resources or various housing alternatives.
The second guide, from US News, looks more specifically at how to fund assisted living if you or a loved one might be considering this housing option.
