Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story

Admittedly, I don’t quite understand racism of any kind, but antisemitism is especially baffling to me, and it seems to be on the rise. Many who subscribe to ill will towards the Jewish people like to claim the holocaust is just a myth or fabrication made by the Jews themselves. Given this backdrop, I thought the timing of this article more than appropriate.

Almost 80 years after the Holocaust, 245,000 Jewish survivors are still alive

Travel for Seniors

I know, not the kind of article you want to see in the travel section, but I thought it worth posting. As many of you have read, Boeing aircraft have had several mishaps recently, including two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019 involving the Boeing 737 Max. Article one delves into not only the numerous accidents and examples of faulty equipment, but the corporate culture that had led to the downfall of Boeing.

Those of you new to my newsletter will quickly learn I have an affinity for train travel. Note that all of the trips described in article two are new train routes, so you could be one of the first to enjoy these trips. Alas, none of these new trips are in the United States. It goes without saying that American train travel is not as prolific as in Europe or other parts of the world. That said, any train trip, no matter where, is a wonderful way to travel or just spend an afternoon enjoying a momentary escape from air or car travel. Sit back and enjoy the views…

Lifestyle, Health & Welfare for Seniors

Recent studies indicate that engaging in reading may significantly contribute to our mental well-being. Classic literary works by authors like William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens have been shown to alleviate conditions such as depression and chronic pain. As article two cites, a 2020 research publication from Oxford University Press highlighted the impact of “challenging language,” suggesting that it acts as a catalyst, providing a mental health boost akin to rocket boosters for the mind. Let’s start reading…after first reading article one!

The term “detox” implies the presence of toxins that require elimination. While cleanses often lack clarity regarding the specific substances involved, it is factual that the body harbors potentially harmful molecules associated with conditions such as cancer, organ damage, reproductive issues, and even fatality. Nevertheless, it is essential to acknowledge that the body inherently possesses an efficiently optimized detoxification system, effectively eliminating these problematic chemicals.

When people say they want to “detox”, what they are really saying is they want a reset. To do that, all one has to do is stop the poor eating habits and adopt a new, healthy whole food diet…as well as be sure to hydrate properly. So, grab your pillow and a water bottle, and make your first purchase of the year something more fun—and effective—than a detox.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

According to this first article, from the Mayo Clinic, though smoking and genetics can put us at risk for certain diseases, poor nutrition is the number one cause of early death. That in itself should be enough encouragement to read the article.

Though much of cooking is steeped in tradition and how “mom used to make it”, article two makes a compelling case for making your favorite grilled cheese sandwich in the air fryer. Even if you don’t have an air fryer, the author offers a better way to make a grilled cheese. Just don’t tell your mother.

Recreation, Exercise & Hobbies

As stressed in the first article, just because it is winter doesn’t mean you have to become a “couch potato”. What is important to stress is that both your body and mind need their daily exercise. Read further about 6 winter activities that can keep you active and prevent the winter doldrums.

The second article deals with a common issue that I wrestle with. This article can shed some light on likely reasons why your plant’s leaves are turning yellow and what to do about it.

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading

I don’t know if it was just boys, but my brother and I grew up watching Saturday cartoons EVERY Saturday. It was a great way to start the weekend after a week of school. If you wax nostalgic from a similar childhood, check out this website, which delves into the history of two of my favorite classic tunes, Bugs Bunny and Road Runner.

Article two was released in mid-February of 2021 (just as the COVID pandemic was ramping up). I thought I would re-post this to give you closer to a full month to tackle this book list. The author notes that she had previously posted an article about 50 Great Contemporary Novels, which established the distinction between classic and contemporary. For today’s article, classic novels are those published prior to 1970 (I must be a classic).

Financial Management for Seniors

Marriage can offer benefits from a Social Security standpoint, particularly when both partners qualify for monthly benefits based on their individual work records. In such situations, it’s worthwhile to explore various filing strategies, as article one lays out.

I have found seniorliving.org to be a wonderful resource for retirement related information. This article, which provides a comprehensive list of senior discounts, is a perfect example of useful information to help you manage your budget and save money.
