Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story

Since 1988, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, one of my favorite organizations, has been unveiling an annual list spotlighting endangered places. Over the last thirty years, this initiative has celebrated dozens of victories. Numerous sites have been rescued, such as the Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, narrowly spared from development as a shopping mall, and Little Rock Central High School, where courageous Arkansas students played a pivotal role in challenging the legacy of legal segregation back in 1957.

Here’s this year’s list of the most endangered historic places in the U.S.

Article one, from Afar, gives us 9 restaurants with great food and even more awesome views. Not surprisingly, the list begins with 3 restaurants with varied views of the Pacific. However, then the list diversifies, finishing with views of the equally impressive Atlantic.

In article two, Time magazine tells us “Flying is safe. Even now. According to the National Safety Council, the lifetime odds of dying on a plane in the U.S. are “too small to calculate.” That doesn’t mean there are not those that fear flying. If you are one of those, this article is for you.

I happen to be a rarity, only developing the habit of drinking a morning cup of coffee once I was retired. Even then, it is usually just one cup. As a “newbie”, I have found it to be mildly unpleasant on an empty stomach. After reading article one, now I know why. Take heart, if you don’t have a sensitive stomach, there is no harm in partaking before breakfast.

According to article two, Americans are notoriously nomadic. I know personally, I couldn’t wait to leave Colorado after graduating from college. That said, I was back in 3 years and returned permanently within 10. As the article, from Stacker, shares, some states just have a stronger hold on their residents and explains what states can make that claim and why.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

Article one is a must-read. It seems scientists have just discovered that consuming specific foods such as non-starchy vegetables before carbohydrates could lead to lower and more balanced blood sugar levels compared to starting with carbs. Particularly during breakfast, these vegetable starters also help in curbing the release of hunger-inducing hormones throughout the day.

Article two may be an unpopular one. Gas stoves have long been favored by both high-end chefs and traditional cooks, especially in older homes. Despite their cooking advantages, there are health concerns with gas stoves, especially on smaller homes and spaces.

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) stretches across about 150 miles, linking Cumberland, Maryland, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Renowned as one of the most picturesque and historically rich rail trails in the nation, this remarkable pathway invites travelers on a scenic voyage through the Appalachian heartland, renowned for its top-tier hiking trails in the United States. If you are intrigued, read more in article one below.

Article two comes from AARP, and comes from a similar perspective. In this instance, it gives us 8 rail trails from across the country. Not surprisingly, their list includes the “GAP” that you read about in article one.

I for one plan to spend part of my retirement frequenting rail trails across America. If that interests you as well, check out this wonderful assortment of Rail Trails books by state or region.

Usually seen as a documentation of the band’s breakup, the documentary “Let it Be”, newly restored by Peter Jackson, is just as much a record of freewheeling inspiration. Article one takes us down memory lane.

Article two, from Literary Hub, gives a list of must reads for the coming summer months. Given the list contains 50 novels, you can pick and choose or perhaps make it a multi-year reading bucket list.

Consumers have embraced ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ products that allow them to pay for purchases in installments, but it’s not clear how many of these loans are out there.

If you plan to be selling your house, you likely have heard the term “curb appeal”. Article two literally discusses curb appeal and your driveway, which is key to the home’s first impression.
