Hello everyone. I can’t believe this is the last day of July! This past week finds me posting 4 new articles. I hope they are of interest, especially the two finger watermelon hack in the Food, Nutrition and Cooking section:
- Retirement News Articles – July 31, 2023
- Bicycle Safety for Seniors
- Meal Delivery Services for Seniors
- Charitable Food Delivery Organizations
I encourage you to check them out.
As noted on my inaugural newsletter post, I am not the author of these retirement news articles, but have searched earnestly for quality articles that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.
Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).
Thank you
Mike
Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles
This week’s Bonus Story is appropriately from “High Country News”. It takes us to Montana, where we find that the grizzly bear has returned from the brink of extinction to the point that it is beginning to expand its range into areas not inhabited by the brown bears since the mid-late 1800’s.

Senior Housing and 55+ Communities
With the first article, we have proof that you can continually find the “best of” lists for anything, as well as find various and repeated opinions and hence numerous lists opining on the same subject.
Article 2 is for those who have decided they no longer want to take care of a home, instead looking at some form of retirement community. This US News article provides ratings for several types of senior housing communities, from independent living to assisted living and nursing homes.

Travel for Seniors
For those of you who like to travel “state-side”, the first article provides you a list of the 50+ most beautiful places in the US. I can’t imagine visiting them all in one year, but I imagine many of you can create some logistical creations that will allow you to knock off this list in only a few years.
Article 2 is included to give all of you international travelers a head’s up. It seems we will soon need a VISA if we want to travel to Europe.

Health and Welfare for Seniors
I have several family members and close friends who suffer from debilitating chronic disease, from MS and diabetes to several more mysterious illnesses that are linked to COVID and/or the COVID mRNA vaccines. It has been painful watching them battle with these diseases. The never-ending suffering tries your patience and for those with a religious belief, it can shake and challenge your faith. The two articles today are in acknowledgement of those that suffer and yet still persevere. I am in constant prayer for all of them.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
We first have a story about the creation of the American hamburger. It’s a very interesting story, though as is often the case with claims such as this, there are some who dispute this claim to being the first hamburger. However, as the article shares, the US Library of Congress has weighed in, which further makes for an intriguing story.
Article two is quite interesting and has been turning some heads. The article discusses a new PURE diet, which actually advocates eating mostly whole fat dairy. There are some income and demographic considerations to the equation as well. It is definitely going to cause a stir for those trying to reduce or maintain their cholesterol levels.
Ah, summer is just about half over and I just now have an article on how to pick out your ripest, juiciest, best tasting watermelons. Lastly, we have a debate of sorts between ice cream and frozen yogurt. Though it’s not said explicitly, I think there is a subliminal message that moderation in everything is best.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
This week I indulge myself with stories of two of my favorite passions. For those of you that share those passions, these articles will be of special interest.
The first article is a great primer for senior cyclists, especially those that are returning to the sport after years of being away. I actually posted a much more in-depth story about this issue this past week. It is entitled Bicycle Safety for Seniors.
After reading about permanent garden railroads across the US and the world, you will come to know that I am not the only one passionate about this mode of transportation and the related hobby of model railroading.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading
“Fourteen Awesome Entertainment Ideas for Seniors” gives you a concise list and description of 14 totally unrelated what I would call entertainment related hobbies. They vary from actual performing arts to outdoor treasure hunting. I can’t imagine there isn’t something on this list you have been just dying to try.
I have a penchant for music of most (though not all) kinds of music. The second article gives you a little historical insight into the Grand Ole Opry and its idiosyncratic ways. Be rest assured, despite the title, the story does not have a tragic ending.

Financial Management for Seniors
Thieves and scams seem to be everywhere nowadays. Seniors are often a promising target for these criminals as is described in article one. If you still utilize checks for payment, especially through the mail, you may want to rethink this outdated practice. Evidently, it plays rights into the hands of today’s thieves.
The second article discourages you from dipping into your retirement accounts too early, but does give you some guidance if you must.
