Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story
It has been a busy week. I am going to quote the introduction to this article as I can’t do it any better:
By the mid-20th century Washington DC had become the first majority-black city in the United States, called “Chocolate City” for its population but also its vibrant black arts, culture and politics.
In a 2021 book, At the Threshold of Liberty: Women, Slavery, & Shifting Identities in Washington, DC, historian Tamika Nunley transports readers to 19th-century Washington and uncovers the rich history of black women’s experiences at the time, and how they helped to build some of the institutional legacies for “chocolate city.”

Travel for Seniors
Like the Bonus Story, the best I can do to introduce article one is to provide a snippet here:
Fortunately for travelers, airfares in general are becoming more affordable compared to the exorbitant prices over the summer. “With the many price drops we’ve seen in recent months, airlines seem to believe demand is softening for fall/winter travel,” says Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going, which tracks flight deals and sends them to subscribers.
But that doesn’t mean that deals for the holidays will last forever. “Domestically, we saw pretty low fares for Thanksgiving even as recently as a few weeks ago, like Washington DC to Orlando for only $98, but now that we are getting closer to November, the likelihood of finding a rock-bottom fare is gradually drying up.”
As tempted as I am, I will not “go political” regarding the second article. That said, it is quite interesting to see the requirements being put into place for the owners of Airbnb’s and short-term rentals in New York City.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors
Article one is from The Guardian. Note you will be asked to subscribe but can just “x” out the pop-up to read the article, which reaffirms that continued mental activity and “exercise” through to old age is beneficial to brain health. The article also discusses various types of activity to stay active from a cognitive perspective.
Panama, Belize, Portugal and the Philippines offer the best incentives to encourage expatriates to relocate and retiree in their respective countries. If retiring to another country is in your horizon, this article is for you.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
Article one takes you on the journey of blueberries first being the “fruit you put in muffins” to a superfood with significant health benefits.
The article from the Mayo Clinic outlines how the old adage “you are what you eat” has been proven to be true…to the point of even being a catalyst for many major health issues.
Article 3 admits that as with any other food, excessive consumption of cheese is not recommended. However, cheese can certainly be incorporated into a balanced diet and offers several health advantages. It is a notable source of calcium, particularly in cow’s milk variations, and the fermentation process involved in crafting certain cheeses can promote gut health. Given the wide array of cheese options available, it can be challenging to select your preferred varieties or determine which ones to purchase. In no specific sequence, article 3 provides a compilation of six nutritious cheeses that deserve a place on your grocery list.
Lastly, a team from the University of Michigan “measured every bit of food, plastic, bits of cardboard, everything for each type of studied meal” and found some interesting results. Their results showed that yes, the subscription kits had more packaging per meal. But overall, grocery store meals yielded more greenhouse gas emissions than the kits—8.1 kilograms of carbon dioxide per meal versus 6.1 kilograms of carbon dioxide, respectively. I’m not sure this will influence your opinion about meal kits, but it’s of interest to some.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
Article one provides expert advice on improving your houseplant care, with everything from choosing the right plant specimen to recognizing when your greenery needs more (or less) attention.
Like many, fall is one of my favorite times of year. Below is an article that provides you 10 great ideas for fall-time activities. Admittedly (and maybe thankfully?), there is a fall theme for most of the activities. I can see one or two, however, that may not have been at the forefront of your mind.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading
Article one combs over 50 years of TV history and arrives upon the worst programming decisions made during that time period. If you are a fan of TV, history or both, it will be a welcome read.
On the other end of the spectrum, you can read the second article and review a list of “great” short, classic novels to add to your bucket list.

Financial Management for Seniors
Article one provides a resource for those who would like to work in retirement. The article is provided by Retirement Living and provides quite a resource for those of you looking for post-career work.
Article two delves into a not so welcome thought and provides some guidance. If you find yourself lacking sufficient savings to cover the expenses associated with residing in a nursing home, you may become eligible for Medicaid assistance. The American Health Care Association mandates that state-administered Medicaid programs must provide coverage for skilled nursing home care.
To access these services, however, you’ll need to satisfy the care level criteria and financial eligibility standards established by your respective state. Navigating these prerequisites can be complex, given that there are multiple avenues to qualify, and each state has its unique regulations. Ultimately, your obligation to contribute to the cost of your care will depend on factors such as your assets and other relevant considerations.
