Retirement News Articles – September 18, 2023

Posted on 09/18/202312/25/2023 by Mike

Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of September 18th:

My favorite articles for the week continue to maintain a fall theme. They are:

  • Bonus Story: The Ancient Forests That Have Defied Urbanization
  • Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors: 50 Fun Activities for Grandparents to Do with Kids
  • Arts, Entertainment & Reading: 10 Reasons Fall is the Best Season for Readers

Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

It has been a busy week. Check out my only other post for the week as well:

  • The Benefits of a Low Sugar Diet

Thank you

Mike

Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story

The bonus story is about how old growth forests have been able to survive despite perpetual urban growth in the US and what we like to call “progress” (that could be a debate for another article).

Travel for Seniors

Enjoy those last summer-like days while you can! Though it may be an Indian Summer, now is a great time to head to the beach while the crowds begin to diminish. If you happen to be in the Miami area, check out this list of their best beaches.

At the other extreme, enjoy article two, which describes the beauty you can find on the Denali Highway during the off season. I believe you can leave your “beach wear” at home for this trip.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors

Article one is from SeniorLifestyle.com and is more than an article. It is a great 22-page guide to healthy senior living. I hate to plagiarize, but this is a great “open” resource on the internet that I think will be useful to my readers. You can download it as a pdf.

Article two is in honor of National Grandparents’ Day, which is the Sunday after Labor Day (sorry, I am late). It is a great list of fun things to do with your grandchildren. It might be a great list to keep handy for those rainy Sundays or just when you are short of ideas.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

The first article is actually not just one, but ten articles that will give you a plethora of ideas on how to step up your outdoor cooking game.

The last three articles provide specific recommendations on several healthy foods that you should incorporate into your diet on a consistent basis to improve and maintain health:

  • Walnuts are my favorite nut, so I was pleased to see the second article. I love them as a snack, but also add them, along with honey and raisins, to my oatmeal. I also like to use them in my zucchini bread.
  • Article three provides a case for mushrooms as a heart healthy food as well as several recommendations on how to incorporate them into your daily diet.
  • Fish, white meat and legumes are 3 lean proteins that help those over 40 build muscle and lose fat. The article explains how these proteins are so advantageous, but leaves it to you on how to add them to your meal planning.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

Article one provides a guide to the best exercises for seniors. An early quote from the article sums up its content best; “Adults of all ages—but especially people older than 65—should focus on a combination of strength and mobility exercises, as well as balance exercises and aerobic activity. However, the best exercises for seniors are the ones they want to do and will do consistently.”

Article two gives you a list of things to do during the cold winter months. I’m sure there is something there for your liking, though I was personally disappointed to see that none of the activities were in the outdoors. Expect to see this avid snowshoer and skier to provide future articles on outdoor activities to augment what you see here this week.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

Article one takes its cue from last week’s article on TV history. This week, as the weather cools, and yes, the leaves begin to change color, I provide you a list of TV shows to put you in the mood for the changing seasons.

Article two is from a reading blog called “bookish coffee blog”, which looks to be a great blog for those of you who like autumn, reading, coffee and perpetual “coziness”. If you fit into this category, you will love this article as it is all about what makes autumn the best time of year to cozy up with a good book.

Financial Management for Seniors

Article one is a short one written by a financial planner named Jennifer Streaks. It’s a seasonal primer to give you food for thought as we head into what can sometimes be the most expensive time of year…the holidays.

Article two is in a similar, but more focused vain, providing you with specific holiday budget tips as we near the “giving season”.
