Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of September 25th. I have to pontificate this fine Monday morning as my Colorado State University Rams football team won their first game of the season after a disappointing double OT loss to the CU Buffs last weekend. At least as noteworthy is CU’s 42-6 lost to the University of Oregon on Saturday. It appears “Hollywood Prime Time” is over and the realities of Pac-12 football are here for Coach Prime and the CU Buffaloes:

Retirement News Articles Bonus Story
The bonus story is about dragonflies, of which there are over 5,000 species on earth. Unlike many insects (mosquitos and house flies), dragonflies come with a certain mystic appeal. I therefore thought this a great, though short article would be worth sharing.

Travel for Seniors
If I were asked to select my favorite outdoor environment, given my Colorado pedigree, it likely is not a surprise that I would select the mountains. Though article one shares beautiful national park hotels in a number of different outdoor settings, it is not surprising that many are in mountainous locations.
Though snow is not yet here, one can still plan ahead for trips to the winter wonderland. Not surprisingly, several of the parks sighted are visited in winter not for the snow, but for the minimal crowds and the more tranquil setting of winter. I hope article two gives you some good ideas.

As article one states, it provides long-term, immediate, and habitual methods for keeping your memories fresh and clear. These disciplines are appropriate for any age, but especially helpful for seniors.
Though green tea is not a significant source of nutrients, it does contain antioxidants and 27 trace minerals that can provide surprising health benefits.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
This week’s food and nutrition articles are for those of you who not only enjoy cooking and eating, but also the history behind the meal or the culinary nuances to the respective dish. These articles are admittedly lengthy, but full of fun facts, history or expert detail depending upon the subject.
I don’t know if I would agree with the writer of article one, who claims the BLT is the ultimate sandwich, but it is an American staple enjoyed by many for generations. Enjoy this gastronomic fan’s take on the sandwich, from the history to what makes it special.
In a similar vein, article two provides a detailed guide to sandwich breads, which some would say is the best part of the sandwich. I might not go that far, but would agree that a good bread can make a good sandwich great and a poor bread can make a good sandwich almost unbearable.
This culinary journey would not be complete without a brief history of pizza. Though the history might be brief, the article does give you a more detailed journey through many of the varied renditions of those worldwide favorite.
After finding the first 3 articles, I knew the fourth had to be about pasta. I found several on the history of pasta, some not very informative and one very informative but just full of typos. I finally arrived upon this one from pasta maker DeLallo. My intent is not to market their pasta, but I appreciated that their article provided both a brief history as well as information on what makes a great pasta (I knew that I liked “coarser” textured pasta, but frankly didn’t know why nor why it was my natural preference).

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
Given that I am from Colorado, I have a real passion for winter recreation, such as Alpine and Nordic skiing as well as snowshoeing. The two articles below share that passion as well as give you a heads up that likely next week I will feature an article on the best snowshoes for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
To me, snowshoeing is the perfect winter recreational activity for seniors. It takes no special skill and though a bit more tiresome, is not much different than walking. If you plan to snowshoe in hilly terrain, I would definitely recommend ski or trekking poles. Frankly, I use them no matter the terrain.
Nordic skiing is a bit trickier as there is a technique to doing it well. That said, like snowshoeing, it is also a low impact exercise and will get you outside to enjoy the winter sights. If you have fair technique, you can definitely move faster than with snowshoes. However, as the terrain varies and becomes hillier, the effort required increases significantly. If you live in an area with hilly terrain, it may be best to start with snowshoes.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading
Admittedly, article one took some time to find as several similar articles were focused upon reading about old age, puzzles for seniors, and how to stay upright. Given that I am not yet of Medicare age (ok, it’s next year), I could not yet share those articles. The article below will give you stories that are for your entertainment and education, instead of how to avoid or postpone the inevitable.
Article two is a diversion from what I usually cover. However, I have fond memories of my parents going to dinner theaters while I stayed home with the baby sitter. Sadly, the number one dinner theater listed, Old Lahaina Luau, is closed until further notice. Thank goodness we have Dolly Parton, as she picks up the slack, with her shows listed at numbers 2 and 3. The list gives you plenty of choices, with 443 shows listed.

Medicare and most private insurance policies do not provide for long term care. At best, they will pay for short term hospice care. If you are of low income, you may qualify for Medicaid, which can provide long term care coverage. Article one gives you a strategic look at this complex issue.
Article two tells us something many of us would rather not hear, as may apply to us. After all of those years of paying into Social Security, once we take the benefits, we could be liable for taxes on those benefits.
