Retirement News Articles- The Bonus Story
This Bonus Story is timely, given the recent news. A quote from the article is a good introduction;” The most powerful storm– with wind speeds of 185 miles per hour —to make landfall in the U.S. was the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The Category 5 storm killed hundreds of World War I veterans on the Florida Keys who had been moved there following the Bonus Army March on Washington, D.C. three years earlier. Novelist Ernest Hemingway, who helped with recovery efforts, wrote a blistering article titled “Who Murdered the Vets” critical of the government, writing “… wealthy people, yachtsmen, fishermen such as President Hoover and Presidents Roosevelt, do not come to the Florida Keys in hurricane months…. There is a known danger to property. But veterans, especially the bonus-marching variety of veterans, are not property. They are only human beings; unsuccessful human beings, and all they have to lose is their lives.”
After giving a historical perspective on the history of hurricanes in the US and their effects on property and lives, the article shares how the advent of ever progressing technology has helped with storm forecasting and catastrophe management. The article closes with a consensus statement that there is still much to be done to better manage natural disasters, from technology advancements to better government policy.

Travel for Seniors
You all know I can’t walk away from a good train story. I hope you enjoying the virtual journey as article one takes all of us through beautiful landscapes across the world. For those that prefer state-side travel, four of the trips are within the US (one is in Alaska).
With article two, we continue the theme of “beautiful places”, looking at Caribbean wonders, from Jamaica’s Waterfalls to the Streets of Cuba. My research tells me that the best time of year to visit the Caribbean is their “dry season”. I didn’t find exact consensus, with one source stating dry season is February to May and another claiming it is mid-December thru April. However, I’m betting if you fit your travels within this window, you should have an enjoyable, memorable trip.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors
Article one is actually a headliner at the top of several articles sharing ideas for summer fun and entertaining. Though we are nearing the end of summer, personally, I think fall could be as good a time as any to continue those outdoor patio parties.
Article two is another reminder of something I’ve said in this newsletter as well as many times to my friends and family. There is nothing like getting outside to enjoy nature for improving and maintaining your physical, mental and spiritual health.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
It’s easy to see there is a core theme to this week’s food, nutrition and cooking posts. I like the idea of starting it off with an article disputing the health myths around eggs as well as providing the healthy aspects of eggs as a nutrient filled food.
After that first article, you can read about a host of ways to enjoy eating eggs, from the ever-simple staple, scrambled eggs, to eggs and tomatoes and beyond.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
I don’t know how many, if any, of my readers enjoy the game of pickleball. If by chance you do, I’d love to hear from you on your experiences in taking up the game and the benefits, from physical to social. Article one gives those just starting ideas on where to play and perhaps meet others who play the game as well.
Article two continues my campaign to encourage you to stay active as you age. The activity itself doesn’t matter as much as the fact that you are engaging in some kind of endeavor that you enjoy and that, if possible, it provides you an opportunity to spend time with others.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading
As we wrap up summer, let’s look at a list of 25 non-fiction books recommended for summer reading. I imagine the books are so note-worthy that they can be enjoyed in the fall or winter as well.
And, as fall does approach, we have a list of 49 must see movies for this fall. The title by-line reads “Grab your apple cider, favorite knit blanket and let’s get cozy!” The list is quite varied and I can’t imagine there isn’t something on this list that won’t appeal to your personal tastes.

Financial Management for Seniors
Article one provides some useful information for social security spousal benefits. The information is basic, but useful if you are just considering taking the benefit…or perhaps don’t even know if you qualify.
Article two gives you a list of assets that may leave your family with not only the asset, but some headaches as well if you choose to pass them on. For some, having an only child might make it simpler, but that is the exception. I would definitely recommend this article to any of you developing an inheritance strategy for your holdings.
