Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of November 27th. Coincidentally, I am currently living 2 blocks from a big regional mall. When we moved here a month ago, I was amazed at how empty the parking lot was on a consistent basis. Then Black Friday happened. The mall lot was overflowing and there was a line of cars several blocks long to get into the parking lot. That’s not for me…and so I posted a blog on shopping for cooks this week. If you don’t like traffic or lines, I encourage you to check it out.
Lastly, after 6 months of producing this newslsetter, I still don’t have many readers. In an effort to be more efficient, I have reduced the number of articles in the Food, Nutrition and Cooking section from 4 to 2. If I hear that you miss the additional food related content, I can add to it in the future.
My favorite articles for the week are:
- Lifestyle, Health & Welfare: Your Complete Guide To 55-Plus Communities In 2023
- Travel for Seniors: The 10 Best Christmas Markets in London
- Food, Nutrition and Cooking: 61 Thanksgiving Leftover Ideas That’ll Make Your Mouth Water
Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.
Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).
I also encourage you to check out my other posts for the week as well:

Travel for Seniors
The first article, from Atlantic Monthly, is at once nostalgic, while also being realistic about Amtrak travel in the US. It goes on to say that there really no good way to travel in America, sometimes due to aging infrastructure, sometimes due to the stretching distance between destinations, as well as logistical considerations, depending upon the mode of travel. If you like trains, as I do, it is worth a read.
For those of you who are world travelers, the second article gives you timely information about Christmas markets in London. It really does look like a fun, festive way to spend the holidays, especially accompanied by your favorite pint of ale.

Article two, from the NIH National Institute on Aging, gives you a great road map on how to stay healthy as you age. It is a must read for all of us and sets you up for a healthier 2024.

Article one shares a story about a newly updated government map and how it has many of the nation’s gardeners rushing online, Googling what new plants they can grow in their mostly warming regions.
It’s called the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “plant hardiness zone map,” and it’s the national standard for gardeners and growers to figure out which plants are most likely to survive the coldest winter temperatures in their location.
The second article, from Great Senior Living, gives you ideas of fun activities, many appropriate for the colder winter months as well as when the family comes to visit.

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading
Article one features a recent publication, titled “How Writing Shaped Humanity: From 3000 BCE to the Present,” delves into the concept of Homo scribens, the Writing Human. Throughout the Western literary tradition, many writers have contended that writing played a pivotal role in defining Homo as fully human, despite acknowledging other aspects of humanity. Article one shares details of the book, which may entice you to read the entire work.
Article two discusses the first folio of William Shakespeare, comprising 36 plays and printed by William and Isaac Jaggard in 1623 near St. Paul’s Cathedral, marked a significant milestone in literary history. With 900 pages, 1,233 characters, and 844,421 words, this elaborate anthology, produced seven years after the playwright’s death, was a unique compilation of tragedies, romances, and histories. It introduced a novel concept of preserving dramatic works in a single compendium, with 750 copies designed as keepsakes to be treasured and passed down. The iconic woodcut of Shakespeare by engraver Martin Droeshout became the visual embodiment of the playwright for many readers, making the folio a pivotal introduction to Shakespeare’s literary legacy.
