Travel for Seniors

It’s been dubbed “the greatest construction project in the world”, and will usher in a new way for travelers to experience Mexico’s ancient Maya sites. The core of the project is a 1,500 kilometer, $28.5 billion dollar rail line that will bring tourists and commerce to southern Mexico, an area impoverished for generations. However, given the environmental effects, that project is not without controversy.

There’s nothing quite like visiting Europe in winter. While most travelers start researching tropical beaches and faraway islands the second the temperatures start to drop at home, we find ourselves dreaming about snow-dusted cobblestones and charming Christmas markets more often than not.

Aside from the holiday rush, most major European cities are refreshingly crowd-free and inexpensive during the winter months – and they offer both outdoor adventures and cozy experiences well worth traveling for. (Seriously, how good does a warm mug of real hot chocolate in a riverside Belgian café sound?)

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors

Lifestyle, Health & Welfare for Seniors

Ordering appetizers to share at the table might be the go-to strategy for friends dining out, but it’s not the ideal for restaurants, The Wall Street Journal reports. The act of sharing plates is so bad for business that some restaurants are tweaking their menus to offset the costs.

You might be one “thank you” away from a much better mood. Science (and celebrities—just ask Oprah.) have proven time and again that gratitude may be the closest thing we have to a silver bullet to a better life. Read on to explore how gratitude works, how to make giving thanks a way of life, and why the return on investment is so enormous. This article is actually a link to 15 stories about gratitude and a better frame of mind.

This first article, from Pocket, is actually 15 articles, of which 13 highlight mouth-watering recipes for wonderful sandwiches. Though they describe them as lunch time delights, I would easily consider one for dinner, especially for summertime outdoor eating.

Article two provides an ultimate guide to upgrading every item on your morning menu, from reinventing your oatmeal experience to getting the crisp on your hash browns just as you like it.

The first article, from the National Council on Aging, provides insights to the many senior centers across the country and their purpose and their effect on senior welfare.

Designated as community focal points under the Older Americans Act (OAA), senior centers have emerged as one of the most extensively utilized services among the elderly in the United States.

Functioning as a gateway to the nation’s aging network, these centers connect one million older adults to essential community services. In collaboration with various community agencies, organizations, and businesses, senior centers play a pivotal role in offering a diverse range of opportunities for older adults to maintain their well-being, stay active, and ensure their safety.

The second article, from the National Recreation and Park Association, provides a look at how local parks and recreation agencies are better serving the growing population of those over 65. Though it doesn’t provide any specific resources, it does reinforce the fact that seniors should consider their local parks agencies as a first stop when looking for recreation resources.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading

In article one, we see a discussion about reading lists; of Great Books, Neglected Books or Favorite Books and how they prove their worth. Like the Michelin travel guide endorsement “Vaut le Voyage,” they implicitly guarantee that the selected titles will be “worth the trip.” You’ll laugh over Jerome K. Jerome’s “Three Men in a Boat,” your heart will break during Madame de Lafayette’s “The Princess of Cleves,” you’ll thrill to “Njal’s Saga,” you’ll feel smarter for having spent time with James Boswell’s “Life of Samuel Johnson.” You really will be, too.

Article two, from Literary Hub, gives us a look at books coming out in 2024 that they are anticipating with enthusiasm. Reading the introductions to each of their selections, I can understand the excitement around these releases.
