This week marks almost two months since I began this journey of forming Optimal Retirement Living and creating the website, which is still in progress. In addition, we are on week two of this weekly newsletter entitled “Retirement News Articles”. As a part of this process, I believe I have arrived upon the primary focus of my company and website. Though I will continue these weekly newsletters, which will maintain their broad coverage of issues of interest to retirees, you will see my other posts begin to focus upon the wonderful, wild world of food. Frankly, not just food, but diet, nutrition, cooking, the history and social/cultural influences, and how so much of life (especially abroad) revolves around cooking, food and the kitchen. I hope you will join me on this journey, it should be fun!!
As noted on my inaugural Retirement News Articles newsletter post, I am not the author of these articles, but have searched earnestly for quality articles that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.
Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).
Thank you
Mike

This week’s focus is on retiring overseas. The first article gives you a good introduction to this concept, with ten key ways to prepare for a life overseas in retirement. You will also see a couple of links to related articles as well.
The second article gives you an idea of the best places to retire in Latin America. This article gives you a short primer on the twelve cities cited, each one in a different country. Like the first article, there are also some links to related stories.

Travel
Today’s travel theme is about best places to travel. The first article focuses upon the top 14 places, according to a recent survey, that retirees say are on their must see list. The list of locations is comprised of 6 destinations in the US and 6 abroad. Each one has a short description with a few related links.
The second article shares the 25 most beautiful places in Europe, from quaint villages to hidden beaches. Again, a short discussion for each is provided and a few related links. My closing comment is that my bucket list continues to grow…
Lastly, I couldn’t resist throwing in two articles about train trips available in the US (well, Canada too).

Health and Welfare for Seniors
The first article is near and dear to my heart as I have a beloved family member who has MS as well as a couple friends who also suffer from this dreaded disease. It is always nice to find hope for sufferers of chronic disease.
The second article lists 12 mistakes arthritis sufferers may commit when exercising. Frankly, as I read the article, this could just as easily apply to any seniors who exercise regularly.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking
As I read the first article, it occurred to me that this could have just as easily been in the Health & Welfare section. This reinforces what I shared in my post “A Life in Balance”, that the different components of our retirement life are intricately intertwined.
The second article will be good news to coffee drinkers (especially my wife!). Expect to see a similar article in the near future highlighting the health benefits of red wine, one of my many vices.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
I continue last week’s theme around the value of walking. In the first article, it is admittedly written by a young PhD candidate. However, the value she finds in the meditative walks are just as applicable for anyone who needs to take a break and clear their head.
The second article shares the many benefits of ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing is not only great physical exercise, but helps you stay socially active and always learning.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading
There is just about nothing I enjoy more than summer time outdoor festivals of any kind. The two articles below provide calendars of festivals across the country. I am sure you can find local ones as well, even though they are not on these lists.

Financial Management for Seniors
The first article is a quick summary of things to do as you prepare for, enter and enjoy your retirement years. The second article provides 10 tips for working in retirement. Having read the short article, I would encourage to do so as well, as the tips are very helpful.
