Posted on 03/18/202403/18/2024 by Mike

Welcome to the Retirement News Articles for the week of March 18th. I produced one post this week in addition to this week’s retirement newsletter:

  • Why Nutrition is Important for Older Adults

My favorite articles for the week are:

  • Travel for Seniors: 12 Best National Parks in California For Stunning Nature and Minimal Crowds
  • Lifestyle, Health & Welfare: Dave Ramsey Says These Are the 14 Best Cities to Retire in the United States
  • Arts, Entertainment & Reading: Ten Classic Baseball Reads for Opening Day

Though I am not the author of these Retirement News Articles, I have searched earnestly for quality content that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Thank you

Mike

Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story

Admittedly, this article, from Mental Floss, is meant to exercise your brain just a little; it provides the following introduction to “contronyms”:

“Here’s an ambiguous sentence for you: “Because of the agency’s oversight, the corporation’s behavior was sanctioned.” Does that mean, “Because the agency oversaw the company’s behavior, they imposed a penalty for some transgression,” or does it mean, “Because the agency was inattentive, they overlooked the misbehavior and gave it their approval by default”? We’ve stumbled into the looking-glass world of contronyms—words that are their own antonyms.”

25 Words That Are Their Own Opposites

Interestingly, my Word editor didn’t acknowledge the word “contronym” and offered similar spellings which were actually different words. However, the word does exist: Grammar 101: What is a Contronym?

A travel adventure which I must admit I have never experienced, cruise ships, is highlighted in article one. Conde Nast shares a list of the best cruise lines for adults. The article is quick to point out that whereas most of the lines are adult only, some are adult “oriented”, meaning that during school holidays, one might find a few older aged youths on the ships. Lastly, most of these adult cruises tend to be on smaller ships.

Actually, upon reading article two, you will find California doesn’t have 12 NATIONAL Parks, but does have a litany of national parks, monuments and state parks from which to choose. Given the breadth of these land resources, article two will set you up for a memorable visit to several that may rival the sights and sounds of Yosemite, but without the crowds.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors

Are you retiring soon and unsure about the ideal city for your next chapter? Financial expert Dave Ramsey offers some city recommendations for upcoming retirees in article one.

Ramsey outlined crucial factors for a good retirement city in a post on Ramsey Solutions, emphasizing elements such as tax rates and housing costs for both homeowners and renters. Explore his choices for the top U.S. cities for retirement and see if they align with your preferences.

Article two, from the Centers for Disease Control, isn’t so much an article as expert guidance on the exercise requirements for older adults. It provides a wealth of information and suggestions on how to stay fit and healthy as you age.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

This chef, from the United Kingdom, originally resisted buying an air fryer. In article one, the gourmand shares that once they bought the kitchen appliance, there was no turning back.

In article two, from Literary Hub, of all places, Novelist Sanaë Lemoine shares her appreciation of the simple sheet pan. Actually, she does more than appreciate, extolling the many virtues of the lowly utensil. In addition, a fellow author shares a favorite recipe.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors
Recreation, Exercise & Hobbies

Starting a new hobby as a beginner can sometimes feel intimidating. It’s easy to feel like you’re being pulled in multiple directions, especially when it seems like you’re constantly spending money. However, diving into a new activity doesn’t always have to break the bank. Pickleball stands out in this regard—it’s both affordable and relatively easy to pick up. In article one, really, a guide more than an article, they walk you through the steps to begin your journey in pickleball, even if you’re a complete novice.

Spring is in the air, though back home in Colorado, so is snow! It’s time to start thinking of getting out and “smelling the roses”. If that, and more, appeals to you, article/slide show two, which highlights some wonderful botanical gardens, is worth a read.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

Arts, Entertainment, and Reading

Article one gives you a list of gangster movies released from 1931 through 2009, and so includes several classics. You should of course not be surprised that many of the movies on this list will contain graphic violence. That seems to be the norm these days, and of course is what you might expect with gangster movies. If this genre of film is for you, read on.

Article two, from Pocket, gives us journalist Devin Gordon’s guide to the best baseball writing, which often is about a lot more than baseball. With opening day just around the corner, why not start it off with reading a good “baseball” book?

If your finances are tight due to factors such as relying on Social Security, a modest pension, or simply earning a low income that leaves little room for maneuvering, there are potential avenues for assistance. Article one offers several strategies to explore for managing debt while dealing with limited income.

Article two, from the Washington Post, is an opinion piece, but is representative of a general feeling across America…tipping has gotten out of control. Whereas the article cites many examples, my personal pet peeve is the on-line take out “app”. Most of these apps generate a tip that you must modify or it will be charged. I’m sorry, it is post-pandemic and if you didn’t “wait” on me, you are not getting a tip.
