Retirement News Articles – Bonus Story
The red pine holds the esteemed title of Minnesota’s official state tree and stands as a prized resource for the timber industry. Nevertheless, the reign of the red pine in this region may be on the decline. In the forthcoming decades, the impacts of climate change pose significant threats, rendering red pine and other Northwoods trees more susceptible to adverse conditions. Longer, warmer summers coupled with milder winters, along with occurrences of droughts, windstorms, wildfires, and insect infestations, create a perilous environment for these trees. The pace of ecological transformation in cold regions due to climate change surpasses the ability of trees to adapt or migrate, signifying potential challenges ahead.
This bonus story shares what is being done in the Minnesota forest by the US Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Northern Research Station to help nature survive a warming climate.
