An Introduction to Nutritional Healing

Nutritional Healing – Modern Medicine is Not Enough

I have personally lived with a chronic disease (asthma) since birth. Several family members and friends have also wrestled with chronic disease in their lives, ranging from diabetes, to MS, asthma, long COVID
and a host of even more mysterious and debilitating diseases. Given that these are people I care about deeply, and that I have, over the past 25 plus years, played a role as a care provider, I am always looking for solutions to the suffering of my loved ones. One component to that solution just might involve nutritional healing.

As I shared in “About Mike”, having witnessed several people close to me deal with long COVID and a host of mysterious, related diseases that have popped up “out of nowhere”. These were people that had led healthy, normal lives to see their health and well-being plummet without explanation. In their quest for answers, they have gone to numerous health care providers and traditional clinics and have yet to find
answers. Some have now turned to non-traditional providers, who take a more holistic look at the situation, often prescribing supplements more so than pharmaceuticals. This has led me to begin to investigate the concept of nutritional healing. This post is an introduction to what will be a 6-part series on nutritional healing and The Healing Power of Food.

The outline for the series, “The Healing Power of Food” is below:

Prologue: An Introduction to Nutritional Healing

Part 1: The Science Behind Nutritional Healing

Part 2: Foods for Boosting Immunity and Preventing Illness

Part 3: Managing Chronic Conditions with Diet

Part 4: Emotional Well-being and Food

Part 5: Healing Foods from Around the World

Part 6: Detoxifying and Cleansing Foods

Conclusion: Cultivating Wellness Through Nutritional Choices

An Introduction to the Concept of Nutritional Healing

The concept of the Healing Power of Food refers to the idea that the foods we consume can have a significant impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It suggests that certain foods and nutrients possess therapeutic properties that can contribute to the prevention, management, and even treatment of various health conditions.

Advocates of the Healing Power of Food believe that choosing a balanced and nutrient-rich diet can play a crucial role in promoting health, supporting the body’s natural healing processes, and potentially
alleviate symptoms or prevent diseases. This concept emphasizes the idea that food is not just a source of calories, but also a source of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other bio-active compounds that can influence our health outcomes.

The Healing Power of Food encompasses several principles:

  1. Nutrient Density: Consuming foods that are rich in essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, can provide the body with the necessary tools to repair
    and maintain its various functions.
  2. Inflammation Reduction: Some foods possess anti-inflammatory properties and can help mitigate chronic inflammation, which is often linked to various diseases.
  3. Gut Health: A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for overall well-being. Certain foods, like probiotics and fiber-rich options, can support gut health and contribute to a strong immune system.
  4. Disease Prevention: A balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods has been associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and
    certain cancers.
  5. Mind-Body Connection: The Healing Power of Food also acknowledges the link between diet and mental health. Certain nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and certain vitamins,
are thought to play a role in brain health and emotional well-being.
  6. Individualized Approach: Different individuals may have unique dietary needs and responses based on factors like genetics, metabolism, and existing health conditions. Tailoring one’s diet to meet these individual needs is an important aspect of harnessing the Healing Power of Food.

Epilogue

I find it ironic that in his article, ”The Overwhelming Evidence of the Healing Power of Food”,
Dr. Mark Hyman, the Founder and Director of The UltraWellness Center, made the case that nutritional health and healing was beginning to be recognized by mainstream medicine. I say ironic, because that
article was penned in 2010…and, Dr. Hyman prophetically stated in the article that it could take 20 years before knowledge of the research became commonplace or used in traditional medicine. As I have traveled the country looking for answers for my son’s mysterious issues, at least at the traditional clinics, Dr. Hyman is correct, as nutrition has seen rarely a mention.

Despite the lack of ready adoption of nutritional healing in mainstream medicine, It seems only logical to me that your health is inexplicably tied to the foods you eat. These foods are the fuel that allows your body to function, and if possessing the proper nutrients, to thrive. However, as you will learn in Part 1 of the series, given the industrialization of American farming, it is not so easy to find the right foods. I am offering this series to not only my readers, but those loved ones that I mentioned before. I hope that as I investigate the concept of nutritional healing you will join me on this journey. More importantly, I hope it provides us all with insights and strategies to improve both our diets and over health.

As I am not a medical professional, it’s important that I note that while the Healing Power of Food can offer numerous benefits, it is not a substitute for medical treatment. In cases of serious health conditions, professional medical advice and intervention should always be sought. Additionally, dietary changes should be made based on reliable scientific evidence and guidance from qualified healthcare professionals.
