Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles

It appears earthlings plan to return the moon, and soon. Admittedly, some of these trips are “manned” and some will be robots only. On July 14th, India launched its Chandrayaan-3 mission, a follow up to Chandrayaan-2, which saw the vehicle crash-land on the moon in 2019. The upcoming landing attempt will come in August. There will be many more trips through this decade, with colonization being the ultimate goal.

Travel for Seniors

The travel articles this week focus again upon US travel. The articles are both written by the same travel blogger who claims to have visited all 50 states at least twice. She provides insights into her favorites and those that may be a welcome surprise once you discover what they have to offer.

Lifestyle, Health and Welfare for Seniors

I am sure you have read numerous articles in recent years about the recurring fires in the western US as well as the annual hurricane season on the east coast. Given climate change, experts claim these extreme weather events will continue to become more frequent, as well as more destructive. Article one provides insights into several alternative methods of providing back-up power for those homes that are affected by these extreme weather events.

Article two shares that many people display similar symptoms weeks before a heart attack. Early recognition and response can be key to a more positive outcome. Lastly, we talk about “Superagers”, those seniors that live longer and continue to thrive despite advancing age.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

The first two articles are an introduction to a concept that I will be revisiting on a consistent basis on my website. There is ever-increasing evidence that the old adage “You Are What You Eat” is as true as ever. In addition, it shows that not only will eating the proper foods keep you healthy, doing so can sometimes help improve chronic health issues as well.

Whew, the article about throwing away your food is a long one. However, I just had to include it, as it is a pet peeve of mine. My family continually rolls their eyes when I say “Don’t throw that out, it’s still good!” I have read numerous articles about how expiration dates are harmless at best, but more realistically, they increase waste and costs to the consumer. In this day of sustainable practices and shrinking resources, it makes sense to rethink this practice.

The fourth article is for all of you cooking mavins who never have enough recipes. The internet is full of them, but some are better than others. Hopefully this article hones your recipe hunting skills and leads you to the Holy Grail.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

This week’s articles cover the gamut, from hiking to train shows. Article one makes the case for using trekking poles while going uphill. It appears, however, the benefits are dependent upon proper technique. Admittedly, the study seemed to focus upon “fast” ascents, which may not be applicable to many of us over 60. Frankly, I find them even more useful for steep downhill portions, especially if you need support, to go slowly or for stabilization.

Article two returns to one of my passions. For those that share a passion for trains, especially model trains, I have provided a calendar of model train shows across the country. It is a timely post, as the shows run from late August 2023 through February 2024.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

If you continue to follow my website, you will see a recurring belief in the value of “lifelong learning”. For many, this includes a natural interest or curiosity in almost anything new. I imagine article one to fit into this category, as you may not be particularly interested in fairy tales, but still find the story intellectually appealing.

I admit to not being a “Dead Head”, though many in my generation wear that moniker proudly. That said, I plan to (re)discover their music in my retirement because my penchant for both music and life long curiosity of things unknown. For those who share a passion for the Grateful Dead and all of its manifestations, I hope you enjoy the article.

It looks like I am a cohort of the peak of the baby boomer generation…those that turn 65 next year. In 2024, the US will have more 65-year-olds than ever before…and it will have a profound effect on the country’s retirement system.

Article two gives advice on how to reduce the costs of long term health care insurance.
