The Highland games, originally a centuries-old Scottish tradition, have a history in the United States that spans over 180 years. Today, hundreds of these competitions are held globally every year, and they have undergone significant evolution since their origins in the 11th century. Notably, these events are no longer exclusive to men, welcoming participants of all genders.

Few experiences can be considered as quintessentially English as savoring a pint of ale in a centuries-old public house, where the very walls seem poised to share their tales. London boasts an abundance of such establishments, a remarkable feat considering the tumultuous history of the Great Fire of London, the devastation of Second World War bombings, and the urban planning that followed the war.

While some of these establishments have stood since the days of Shakespeare, others are relatively recent Victorian inclusions, yet each possesses a captivating narrative of its own. If you by chance are going to be in London anytime soon, I would definitely recommend checking out at least one or two of the pubs mentioned in article one, if not one or two each night you are in residence!

When it comes to must-visit cruise destinations, few places hold the same allure and bragging rights as the Earth’s polar regions. Whether your goal is to capture stunning wildlife photographs or witness the planet’s most extreme landscapes, there’s a growing array of options to help you achieve your aspirations. Article two provides insights into this latest trend.

Article one discusses how isolation and loneliness can contribute to brain shrinkage and cognitive decline. It goes on to stress the importance of socializing and staying connected to others to ensure brain health.

As we continue to age, bone health can inevitably decline. Article two discusses the increasing risks of bone fractures for older adults and quoted a shocking statistic…”Nearly 20 percent of those on Medicare hospitalized a week after their fracture dies within a year.” I encourage you to read the article and take the advice it offers, which ranges from getting a bone health assessment to exercises to strengthen your bones.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

As we have all heard, a healthy diet includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Coincidentally, the Food, Nutrition & Cooking featured articles completely adhere to that mantra.

Article one, which actually has 12 embedded articles, gives you tasty, yet easy recipes for roasting your favorite vegetables. One of those featured articles acts as article two in this series. I thought it useful as it gives you the basics of roasting vegetables, no matter what kind, whereas the rest of the series is more focused upon specific vegetables or recipes.

Now that vegetables are covered, it is time to move on to fruits. Strawberries are good for you for a variety of reasons. Article three lists the myriad reasons as well as makes suggestions on how to incorporate the fruit into your diet.

In similar vein, the closing article, though relatively short, provides a run down on the health benefits of several choices of fruit. Given the varied benefits of each, the article wisely recommends that we be sure to include a variety of fruits in our diet.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

OK, i sincerely hope your response to the Recreation & Hobbies selection today doesn’t cause you to think “when is this guy going to stop talking about snowshoeing!?” I promise I will do my best not to make it 4 weeks in a row for the October 23rd newsletter.

That said, I do believe it is a wonderfully simple, yet rewarding outdoor activity for those that aren’t ready to hide indoors for the entire winter. If you have never tried it, I encourage you to do so. Article one is a great introduction to that end, while article two can give you some pointers on trail selection as well as making an informed decision whether snowshoes are really appropriate for some of your favorite or potential trails (the major determinant is snow conditions).

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

Many readers may think article one odd as it frankly doesn’t come to the monumental conclusion I had expected as I read the first paragraphs. However, I still found value in the “story” as it was written in a whimsical, entertaining way. I considered it a pleasant departure from the norm. Just like a constant diet of the same food can be not only boring, but also unhealthy, I decided that though this story may give a few of you literary indigestion, for many, it might bring about a much-needed chuckle. You may even see a similarity between Mark, the writer’s dear friend, and a dear friend or family member in your life.

The second article starts out with the sub-title “Because people may cheat, steal, and kill, but their hips don’t lie.” If that is not intriguing enough, read the article and watch the videos. Admittedly, one of them is age-restricted, so you may choose to skip that one.

I think most of us have seen advertisements or commercials for reverse mortgages, with almost all of them targeting retirees. On the surface, they seem like a can’t lose proposition for many older homeowners looking for some added income. However, reverse mortgages are complex and require some forethought. Article one definitely gives you some things to think about before you jump in with both feet.

In a similar vein, for a variety of reasons, some retirees may be considering refinancing their home. As article two attests, there are a few good reasons for doing so. For those of you considering either of these paths regarding your home and your hard-earned equity, I hope these articles provide some helpful information.

5 Reverse Mortgage Pros And Cons

Should seniors refinance their mortgage?
