Living a Happy, Healthy Retirement

Retirement News Articles – July 24, 2023

I have been very productive over the last week and a half, posting several articles:

I encourage you to check them out.

As noted in my inaugural newsletter post, I am not the author of these retirement news articles, but have searched earnestly for quality articles that will prove of value and interest to my subscribers. I hope you enjoy these articles and encourage you to comment on not only the content, but with thoughts on what subjects you would like to see in this weekly compilation.

Please note that you can now subscribe to this weekly edition on the upper right-hand portion of my website (or for those viewing this on a smart phone, it should be at the bottom of the page).

Thank you
Mike

Bonus Story for Retirement News Articles

This week’s Retirement News Articles Bonus Story is about Mary Hunter Austin, an eccentric woman who spent a dozen years in the wilds, from the Sierra Madre to the scorching Mojave Desert. She authored a small book, titled “The Land of Little Rain”, which chronicled her travels in the 1890’s.

Senior Housing and 55+ Communities

With the first article, we advance from last week’s article on preparing your house for sale. This week, we are talking about 55+ communities. I apologize for the ever-present mortgage financing ads, as this article comes from Rocket Mortgage. That said, it gives a helpful quick pro and con look at this type of housing community.

Now that the kids are gone, you’ve sold the house and downsized, you have lots of free time, right? Hopefully that is the case; now, what do you do with all that free time? Here we have tips to make sure that time isn’t spent just seated on the couch while watching TV and eating potato chips.

Travel for Seniors

If you have been following me, you know I am an avid train buff. The first article continues that theme and as an intro, I encourage you to look for a paragraph or two about The Hudson River Rail Excursions run between New York City and Albany, which are organized by the nonprofit United Rail Historical Society of New Jersey. Admittedly, this run is more affordable than the others.

Article 2 is a news item from a couple who author a travel blog called “The Happiness Function”. Personally, none of the dangerous countries they have listed are on my “gotta go” list, but to each their own.

Health and Welfare for Seniors

Wow, in 1938, Harvard researchers embarked on a study that continues to this day to find out “What makes us happy in life?” They found that retirees don’t miss work, they miss the people. You can read the article for further study. The second article is related to this as it provides a detailed look at loneliness and ways to fight isolation.

Food, Nutrition & Cooking

I have a theme for this week’s Food, Nutrition & Cooking articles. I am going to call it “Save Your Vices” week.

We start off with 17 guilt free (that’s right) dessert recipes, followed up with even more guilt-free desserts in article two. Who is not going to love that?! It’s then on to vices of the less sugary type, pizza and alcohol. I admit to having a love affair with pizza, so my favorite of this week’s articles has to be “How to Build a Healthier Pizza”. Lastly, to top it off, we have the 15 healthiest alcoholic drinks.

Recreation & Hobbies for Seniors

I felt so strongly about the value of this article, that I received permission from the publisher to post it on my website this past week. It not only lists the 120 Best Bikes for Seniors (it was 119 last week?), it also includes a great Bike Buyers Guide as well.

The second article is from a hobby blog site called Different Hobbies. For you hobby “fiends”, you may want to subscribe to their newsletter.

Arts, Entertainment & Reading

If you have been following my Retirement News Article newsletters, you know that I have an affinity for summer festivals of all kinds. There have been various festival calendars featured in my previous newsletters…but only one at a time. I apologize that as we enter “mid-summer”, it didn’t occur to me until now that a compilation of these calendars would prove handy to my readers. Here it is, with not a minute to spare. I will say that the list below is not complete as you can search and find dozens of such calendars. However, I do feel this is representative and will have saved you the trouble of searching.

Though I don’t seem to find enough time to feed my love for reading, I still yearn for a good book, a glass of wine and enjoying it all in front of the fireplace. With that picture in mind, find below a list of 30 must reads for every bibliophile.

The first article provides great advice on alternative strategies to optimize your tax burden and increase the life of your retirement savings. After that, we move on and look at 24 “great” part-time jobs for those of you who just can’t leave the workplace completely. I can’t say many of these jobs are on my hit-list, but one of them is sure to appeal to you.
